"Don't do that.", Dr White chided.
"Are you saying that I'm pregnant?", I confirmed with him. He nodded and smiled.
"You are sure?", I asked again. He nodded again.
"Very very sure?", I tried again. He nodded harded and frowned.
"You are very pregnant, and about 3-4 weeks into the pregnancy.", Dr White explained.
"Qiu, I don't think that Dr White is wrong. Look at the screen. Do you see it?", Pris said and pointed to the little figure.
"Is that her?", I asked and lay down as Dr White helped clean me up.
"Do you want a photo?", he asked. I nodded.
"I'll get one printed for you.", he said and got up.
Pris and I looked at each other. She smiled.
"Congrats Qiu.", she said softly.
"I wish it were you instead.", I said and squeezed her hand.
"No, it was a good thing that I was not pregnant.", she frowned, then her expression softened.
"Are you going to tell Gareth? He will be elated.", she asked and looked at me.
"No, not yet. Marriage and a child. He hasn't even asked me to be his girlfriend. Maybe at Christmas, I don't know.", I said and gently rubbed my tummy.
Dr White returned with a photo of the ultrasound. We thanked him and left to return to the Manor. Gareth was stil nowhere to be found. Pris and I settled in the kitchen, as she prepared a cup of warm milk for me.
"No more coffee and tea for you.", she warned.
"No!!!", I whined.
"Caffine is bad for the baby.", she chided. I sighed.
"Whose baby?", Gareth asked. Pris and I looked up in surprise.
"Our friend. She's pregnant, and we were talking about what not to eat or drink during a pregnancy.", Pris explained.
"She even sent us a photo of the ultrasound.", I said and handed the ultrasound photo to Gareth.
He took it from me and looked at it, and frowned. He put the photo closer to his face. I smiled.
"I don't see it.", he said and looked at the photo again.
"Here.", I said and pointed to the little 9 figure.
"Ah! It's so small.", he said softly with a smile.
I watched Gareth as he looked at photo. Pris was right, he would be elated. Maybe during Christmas, I'll tell him at Christmas. It was just another month to Christmas. I smiled to myself.
"Chéri?", Gareth called out and touched my arm.
"Yes?", I looked up at him.
"Are you feeling okay?", he asked, concerned.
"I'm fine.", I said and took the glass of milk that Pris had handed to me.
The day passed without a hitch. After dinner, Pris had taken Aemee back to her room. Gareth and I retired to my room. After a long hot shower, we snuggled in bed. He was sketching while I played with my NDS. After an hour or so, I turned off the console and stretched and laid down in bed and rolled around. Gareth looked at me and arched an eyebrow, he grinned.
"What is wrong chéri?", he asked as he set aside his things.
"Nothing. A question though.", I said and laid on my side.
"Shoot.", he said as he leaned on the headboard and looked down at me. I sat up opposite him. He looked at me expectantly.
"What if.. What if!!", I said aloud.
"Okay... What if..", Gareth began.
"I really was preganant, what would you have done?", I asked him gently.
Gareth's eyes brightened and he smiled. He looked utterly handsome when he does that.
"Why, I'd marry you of course!", he exclaimed.
"But I'm not even your girlfriend.", I rebutted. Gareth looked at me in surprise.
"I mean.. Nevermind I asked the question.", I tried again, looked at Gareth, lost for a moment and snuggled back under the covers.
"No chéri, let me..", he said and got off the bed. I sat up and watched him.
Gareth rammaged his bag for abit and pulled out a small paper bag which looked vaguely familar. He returned and climbed into bed and sat beside me. I turned to face him. He opened the paper bag and pulled out 3 boxes. I eyed the bag, it was from Tiffany & Co.
"Chéri, erm.. Er..", Gareth stammered. I looked at him, waiting for him to continue."I didn't know which one to get, so I got all three.", he explained as he opened the boxes slowly.
I looked at the rings and gasped in surprise. Gareth only smiled. He opened all three boxes and laid them on my bed. The rings glistered under the light. They were beautiful.
"I'm not asking you to marry me. We have not gone that far yet. But, I don't want any other guys oogling around you. I want the world to know that you are mine.", he said softly, his green eyes piercing.
"Say that you will be mine.", he continued and looked at me. His hands gently squeezing mine. I looked into his green eyes, and knew very well that he meant every word he had said. My heart skipped, but I knew I was not going to say yes. I looked away from Gareth.
"Chéri?", Gareth said softly.
"Gareth, I..", I began and sighed.
"I see. But you keep them anyway. A gift from me.", Gareth said slowly, his eyes dimmed.
"Gareth, I'm sor...", I began, but Gareth only put his finger gently on my lips.
"I don't want to hear it. No, mabe I was rushing it. I understand.", he said with a weak smile.
"But..", I tried again. He just shook his head.
"No buts. I will try again. Soon.", he said and smiled. But his eyes told me otherwise.
Silence.
"We should get to sleep.", he said and began keeping the boxes back into the paper bag. I only nodded. I watched as Gareth got out of bed and gently put the bag onto my work desk. He returned, climbed into bed, got under the covers and slept.
I turned away, our backs facing each other. I sighed and tried to sleep. Futile attempts. What seemed hours passed, I turned to look at Gareth. His breathing even, he must have fallen asleep. I gently got out of bed, grabbed my pillow and headed down to the kitchen.
~~~
Gareth could not sleep either. She had rejected him. It was then, he felt her shift around in bed, and he knew she was checking if he was asleep. She got out of bed, and he heard the door gently click shut.
Gareth turned onto his back and stared up at the ceiling. He sighed. Why did he even try? Now it had all gone the wrong way. His heart ached. He closed his eyes and rest his right arm over them. He could not give up yet, he loved her too much to. But Gareth has another problem on hand, and it required that he be back in London next week.
Whatever had happened earlier, did not happen at all. Gareth was not going to give up, and tomorrow is a new day. He will be himself and not let one rejection get to him. But he was nsure of how Autumn will react to him.
With that thought, Gareth fell asleep.
~~~
I went into the kitchen and settled on the couch. I had pulled out the blankets available in the cabinets.
I sighed.
Why did I reject him?
I touched my belly gently.
Tell me little one, what should I do about this Daddy of yours?
I snuggled in the couch and soon fell asleep.
